Ramsar site
The Lafnitz River is one of Europe’s oldest borders, and still forms a large part of the frontier between Burgenland and Styria. The river rises in Styria’s Wechsel alps, and joins the Raab 110 km downstream at Szentgotthard in Hungary. The flow is forever creating new wetland habitats – ideal conditions for a wide variety of flora and fauna, including:
- The Siberian sword lily
- The stork
- The kingfisher
To preserve these rare habitats, Austria declared the Lafnitz Valley a Ramsar Convention site in 2002.
